Description
Nobody seems to understand six-year-old Darryl, until one day he meets a mysterious new friend, Blob. The visitor from space takes Darryl on an adventure through the Universe of Feelings. Developed from an inclusive arts residency at Rainbow Centre and published as a children’s book in 2019, Universe of Feelings follows a minimally verbal boy’s journey as he experiences an array of emotions. The show hopes to spark more understanding about children with special needs who communicate in ways other than words.
The performance is produced by Superhero Me, supported by Republic Polytechnic’s School of Technology for the Arts and Enabling Village. It is designed for a diverse crowd aged 5-12 years, and features a borderless set with no stage, sensory craft and props to enable audience participation, and modified light and sound elements to accommodate children with special needs. In partnership with Rainbow Centre, Superhero Me will also train four youths with special needs as Foley artists for the production.
